Chapter 7

THADORA

Bundled up and trudging through the snow, I follow the clearing around his property looking for the drone. D’Kota’s concern takes on a new level of intensity as he puts his binoculars over his eyes, searching the skies.

"If I had the Fuga repaired we could fly around looking for it," I say with a sigh.

He pulls the binoculars from his eyes and turns to me. "That would be wonderful if it was. How much longer do you think it will take to get it fixed?"

"I’ve been working hard on it. It's not ready to fly yet, though. The nanites take time to rebuild the outer hull as well."

"Is there anything you can do to speed the process up? Because if it is the drug cartels from Mexico, this could get bad quickly," D’Kota tells me. I don’t immediately answer his question.

We continue to look around the surrounding landscape, but we find nothing more than the whispering wind in the tops of trees and the occasional howl of a wolf far off in the distance. The drone has disappeared. "Maybe it's not a spy drone for you. It could've just been a coincidence. I mean, drones are fairly common now and people enjoy looking at land from a drone’s eye view," I remark.

"I have never seen a drone here before. Not until today. In fact, the only time I've ever seen so much as an airplane flying over is when they drop supplies to me a few times a year. That is, until you crashed on my land," D’Kota says. He turns his back to me, looking through his binoculars.

I didn't care for the tone in his voice. It was almost accusatory, as if I'm the one with the danger following me. "I assure you, I had nothing to do with the drone.”

"I don’t believe you do. I just find it odd, that’s all," he replies.

Until the drone showed up, we were having a wonderful moment. Now I feel as if he's accusing me of something that I have no control over. That the drone flew over his land today has nothing to do with the fact that I crashed several weeks ago. Unless, somehow, they saw me on radar and followed me here. But why would they be searching for me? I flew through the exosphere and stayed off radar, mostly. It made no sense. The only thing that makes sense to me is that his enemies are searching for him.

"So what if it was the cartels? They don't know that this is your place. They think this place belongs to Michael Archer, not D’Kota Fields. They didn't see you here. Unless someone tipped them off from the government. And what good would that do? Who cares if you are here? I guess I don't understand the way your enemies think or operate. Why would they want to see you dead? You are one man and it's not like you're stopping them from doing anything now.”

D’Kota turns to me, his binoculars falling to the side of his body in his hand.
